Freya is now 11 months old!

It’s been a habit of mine to read about my baby’s milestones every month. I wanna know how my child is growing compared to other children of the same age. I’d always google  about milestones and would need to read several opinions  before I could consider it. I always look up at least 3 information before I conclude. I wanna know my kids milestones not to brag about how smart they are but to know if they are on the right track. I know how very important it is for every Mom in the world to know such things. And just like every Mom, I’m so proud to say that my baby’s milestones is ahead compared to average babies.

Many of us wondered what Developmental Milestones really is? Here’s an overview and a little information I got from the website I just stumbled upon minutes ago. It can give a little insight about your baby’s milestone.

What is child development?
Child development refers to how a child becomes able to do more complex things as they get older. Development is different than growth.  Growth only refers to the child getting bigger in size.  If you are concerned about your child’s development, please see Developmental Delay on YourChild.
When we talk about normal development, we are talking about developing skills like:

  • Gross motor: using large groups of muscles to sit, stand, walk, run, etc., keeping balance, and changing positions.
  • Fine motor: using hands to be able to eat, draw, dress, play, write, and do many other things.
  • Language: speaking, using body language and gestures, communicating, and understanding what others say.
  • Cognitive: Thinking skills:  including learning, understanding, problem-solving, reasoning, and remembering.
  • Social: Interacting with others, having relationships with family, friends, and teachers, cooperating, and responding to the feelings of others.

What are developmental milestones?
Developmental milestones are a set of functional skills or age-specific tasks that most children can do at a certain age range.  Your pediatrician uses milestones to help check how your child is developing.  Although each milestone has an age level, the actual age when a normally developing child reaches that milestone can very quite a bit.  Every child is unique!

This 2nd information is what I could compare to our baby Freya’s developmental milestones.

By 12 months of age does your child:

Motor Skills

  • drink from a cup with help ~ maybe she can do it with a little help
  • feed herself finger food like raisins or bread crumbs
  • grasp small objects by using her thumb and index or forefinger
  • use his first finger to poke or point
  • put small blocks in and take them out of a container
  • knock two blocks together
  • sit well without support
  • crawl on hands and knees
  • pull himself to stand or take steps holding onto furniture ~ Freya can walk now.
  • stand alone momentarily
  • walk with one hand held
  • cooperate with dressing by offering a foot or an arm ~ don’t wonder coz Freya does this thing.

Sensory and Thinking Skills

  • copy sounds and actions you make
  • respond to music with body motion ~ She dances when she hears music in the background.
  • try to accomplish simple goals (seeing and then crawling to a toy)
  • look for an object she watched fall out of sight (such as a spoon that falls under the table)

Language and Social Skills

  • babble, but it sometimes “sounds like” talking
  • say his first word ~ She can say “Ate”, Mommy and Daddy.
  • recognize family members’ names
  • try to “talk” with you
  • respond to another’s distress by showing distress or crying ~ When I pretend that I’m crying Freya would also cry
  • show affection to familiar adults ~ She smiles and hugs her “Ate”(big sister) everytime comes home from school.
  • show mild to severe anxiety at separation from parent ~ I’m telling you Freya would go berserk when I’m out of her sight. She’s my tail LOL.
  • show apprehension about strangers ~ She cries when someone unfamiliar would talk to her or smile at her.
  • raise her arms when she wants to be picked up ~ yes! yes! yes! She loves to be held all the time LOL
  • understand simple commands ~ When she picked up something and if I say “Freya don’t touch or don’t eat it”, she’s going to throw it and give you a sad face and cry.

Here’s a good URL I can recommend for you Mommies out there for your babies Developmental Milestones on age group.

To end my entry here’s some of Freya’s picture and video showing some tricks hehe. Just lower your speaker so you won’t get startled by my loud voice

Videos and pictures were taken before she exactly turned 11 months. BTW, I think Freya can also draw at her age right now though am not sure just check out my previous entry here.

And she can also prepare her own bath. Nah, just kidding hehehe. Thanks for reading everyone. Happy Tuesday!

You know I’ve loved reading about Freya’s development on your book! My Mom carefully made a ‘memory’ book; writing don’t small episodes and put in pics and other document from I was born until 7 years old. I still have it and treasure it!

I also love the name Freya because; It is of Scandinavian origin, and its meaning is “noble lady”. Norse mythology: Freya was the goddess of love and fertility. Friday was named for her.

    • Scart says:

@Renny: wow that’s a lot of information. thanks for it. Freya also mean goddess of beauty hehe

@kit: wow kunti lang pala nila noh. nakow kit i enjoy tracking my babies milestones saka sa kakabasa ko nakakabasa din ako ng mga tips pano pa mapa-improve language and communication nila. pati ako natuto hehehe
